5 Signs You Need An Emergency Tooth Extraction

Now, let’s look at 5 signs that a tooth extraction may be in your immediate future. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the most common reasons for tooth removal are crowding, trauma or disease.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Every year, about five million Americans require wisdom teeth removal. If a wisdom tooth becomes impacted, it can lead to infection, periodontal disease, cysts, tumors, and damage to adjacent teeth. In such cases, wisdom teeth may require emergency extraction.

To find out if you are a candidate for wisdom tooth removal, get an evaluation from the best Oral Surgeon in the Briarcliff Manor area, Dr. Greenberg.

Severe Dental Caries (Cavities) and Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Sometimes, severe dental caries, generally called cavities or tooth decay, can lead to cases where root canal or apicoectomy can no longer save a tooth. In such cases, cavities have damaged the tooth pulp beyond restoration.

Although we always try to save a tooth wherever possible, sometimes the only option is to extract a diseased tooth.

Similar to severe tooth decay, severe periodontal or gum disease can lead to bone decay. In such cases, an abscess may develop. Then, to alleviate further pain and decay, an Oral Surgeon may decide emergency tooth extraction is required.

Dental Abscess

When brushing and flossing doesn’t remove plaque buildup, it allows bacteria to take hold and may eventually lead to an abscess.

When an abscess develops inside a tooth or gums, it won’t heal on its own. Over time, a bacterial infection can accumulate in the soft pulp of the tooth.

However, when caught early, a root canal may save an infected tooth. In such cases, you may feel pain, a bad taste in the mouth, or fever.

If left untreated, symptoms can worsen and cause difficulty swallowing, breathing, and insomnia. If so, you will require emergency treatment immediately.

In advanced cases, an abscess can affect the bone structure of a tooth. Then, it can be too late to save the tooth and need an emergency tooth extraction.

Trauma Causing Injury to the Tooth

According to The American Association of Endodontists (AAE), most traumatic injuries to the teeth are due to accidents or sports-related. Often, these injuries caused minor chips but still require immediate examination by a dentist or an endodontist. Otherwise, an unnoticed injury can worsen over time.

If possible, a dentist or oral surgeon will attempt to save any injured teeth. However, sometimes the damage is not treatable. With an emergency tooth extraction, further decay, pain, and damage are avoided.

As Part of Orthodontic Treatment

Occasionally, an orthodontist will need to extract one or more teeth to make room to align a smile properly. Known as “extraction orthodontic treatment,” it is only suggested when absolutely necessary, the last resort. In such cases, teeth may be severely crowded, or there may be extra teeth present.
