What are Dental Implants and Are You A Candidate?

Dental implants are titanium screws that simulate the root of a tooth and provide the foundation for a permanent crown that both functions as and looks like your normal healthy tooth.

The implant is surgically placed by the oral surgeon into the jawbone where the missing tooth was, by a process called osseous integration. This process results in a permanent fusing of the implant into the patients’ jawbone. This
forms the basis for a solid platform upon which a crown is placed.

Dr. Greenberg placed his first implant in 1986, and has placed thousands of new and improved implants over many years. A common series of procedures, performed by Dr. Greenberg, is to simultaneously extract a tooth and have an
immediate placement of the implant on the same day. If the condition of the patients’ bone isn’t optimal, he will place a bone graft into the socket immediately following the
extraction, and a waiting period of 4 months will be necessary to regenerate new bone that can receive the implant.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to develop and erupt in your mouth. They erupt between the ages of 17 to 25. When a wisdom tooth is unable to fully or partially erupt into the mouth, they are said to be “impacted”. Impacted wisdom teeth that are unable to break through the gums due to lack of space in the jaw, often need to be surgically removed.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVED?

There are many potential problems associated with Impacted Wisdom Teeth:

(1) Infection that causes pain and potential systemic illness
(2) The formation of cysts and tumors
(3) Damage to adjacent teeth
(4) Periodontal disease

The best way to know whether you are a candidate for wisdom tooth removal is to be evaluated by Dr. Greenberg, with an exam an x-ray.With a Panoramic x-ray he will be able to see not only your wisdom teeth, but how they impact the rest of your teeth.

Exposure of Impacted Canines with a bracket and a gold chain

Impacted canine teeth cannot erupt into a normal functioning position. The impacted canine tooth has the longest root in the mouth, and are the foundation of a balanced smile and a functional occlusion. Normally, the upper canine teeth are the last of the front teeth to erupt into place and usually come in at the age of 13.

When the Orthodontist is unable to bring the impacted canine into a proper position, the Oral Surgeon is asked to do a surgical exposure of the impacted canine. He then attaches a bracket and a gold chain which aids the eruption of the tooth and brings it down into the proper position.

Apicoectomy/Surgical Root Canal

When conventional root canal therapy has failed, causing
swelling, infection, pain and cyst formation, an alternative
to tooth extraction is an apicoectomy. The tip of the tooth
is called the Apex and ectomy means ‘removal of’. Therefore,an apicoectomy literally means removal of the tip of the tooth.Additionally, all inflamed and infected tissue is removed from within the bone at the time of this procedure. A small filling is placed into the root to seal the end of the root canal.Over time, the bone regenerates around the root of the tooth.
