Post-op Instructions

BLEEDING:

Remove and change gauze as needed until bleeding subsides. Do not rinse, spit or smoke for the first 24 hours. Spitting and rinsing can cause bleeding to continue.

PAIN and INFECTION:

Take your medications as directed on the package. If you develop hives or a rash, discontinue all medications and contact our office. Do not drive or operate mechanical equipment after taking prescription pain medication. Signs of infection, increased pain and swelling after 3 days, redness, warmth and fever. If this occurs, contact our office.

SWELLING:

Apply an ice pack 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off to your jaw immediately upon returning home and change it frequently. Continue this on and off for 24 hours. Peak swelling should occur on the second and third day postoperatively and diminish slowly.

DIET:

Soft and cold diet is recommended for the first day after surgery. The next day you may have a warm and soft diet. Increase your fluid intake and gradually resume your normal diet. Avoid seeds, nuts and popcorn for a month after surgery.

NAUSEA:

Do not take narcotic prescription pain medication on an empty stomach! If you vomit from the medication please call our office immediately.

ORAL HYGIENE:

The day following surgery, rinse gently with warm saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt per 1/2 a glass of lukewarm water) after each meal and before bedtime. Teeth should be brushed, but the surgery site should be avoided.

REST:

Avoid overexertion and get adequate rest. Avoiding sports, exercise, and strenuous activity for at least 2-3 days is generally recommended.
